Viewers of Griffin Communications, L.L.C.’s Oklahoma television stations, News 9 in Oklahoma City and News on 6 in Tulsa, donated $1.4 million to victims of Hurricane Katrina. David Griffin, President and CEO and Bank of Oklahoma’s Senior Executive Vice President, Dan Ellinor, presented a check for $1.2 million to Mary Franklin of the American Red Cross. Shortly after the presentation, another $200,000 was donated to the fund by the stations’ viewers.

This Sunday night sports show is the only weekly statewide sports program in the state. NEWS 9 (KWTV) and The News on 6 (KOTV) showcase sports analyst Dean Blevins and John Holcomb who host state and national sports notables. The Blitz is extended to special programming during March Madness and the bowl season. The 2004 Final Four Blitz was nominated for an Emmy and won recognition from the Oklahoma Broadcasters Association.

This 2004-05 project increased statewide awareness on critical education issues such as high-stakes testing. Both NEWS 9 and The News on 6 produced stories that aired on both stations’ newscasts. Part of the project involved a book drive in which viewers and businesses donated more than 17,000 books. The project earned the stations community service awards from both the Oklahoma Broadcasters Association and the Oklahoma Education Association.

The early primary election in 2004 meant national politicians campaigned heavily in Oklahoma. It provided Griffin Communications’ television stations with the opportunity to produce a statewide Democratic Presidential Forum. All of the primary presidential candidates attended the Stillwater, Oklahoma event, which was aired statewide on NEWS 9 and The News on 6.
